I didn’t expect it to happen so quickly.
Recently, I turned in my rewrites to my agent. I expected her to ask for more, possibly a lot more, weeks of work no doubt. She asked for one new sentence. I gave her two. I’m an overachiever.
Then she asked for a “promotional platform plan” plus a few paragraphs on the next two books in the series and some other miscellaneous stuff. I had no idea what a “promotional platform plan” was. I went to journalism school. I do not have an MBA. But I wrote something that I kinda sorta thought might be the rough draft of something that could be called a “promotional platform plan” if you were being very generous and were also possibly drunk.
I made an appointment with her for a phone meeting. I pulled out a crisp, new notebook to write down all the things I’d done wrong. I expected to fill it.
I wrote down two words. The names of the publishers she was going to start shopping the book to that afternoon.
“But, but, but…” I said. “What am I supposed to be doing?”
“Nothing,” she said. “Sit back. I’ve got this. My agent Spidey sense is tingling.”
Then she asked how long it would take me to write the next book.
Now that I think about it, that was probably a hint. I don’t think she wants me to do “nothing.”
